I came to computers late on. I worked in a number of different jobs before completing a BTEC Diploma in IT. I then completed a Higher National Diploma before finally obtaining a Computer Science degree at Ulster University.
For the placement year of my degree, I worked as a network technician within the same building as Covernet. I got to know and become friendly with the Covernet staff. Toward the end of my degree, I noticed that Covernet were advertising for three graduate software developers, I applied and the rest is history.
My first task in the morning is checking that all claims and reporting jobs from overnight programs have run successfully, then the typical day starts. I work on a wide range of customer requirements, mainly within the claims and reporting systems.
I would say I enjoy problem solving the most. It’s a great feeling when you have come up with solutions to problems. Then there’s the team within Covernet: staff turnover is low so you get to know everyone. Finally there’s the commute; because I live locally, the work-life balance is excellent.
I’m lucky to live in one of the most beautiful areas of Ireland, so when I’m not running the kids to their many activities, I enjoy time swimming in the sea or going for a walk. Of course, when the weather is bad there is always Netflix.
