Laura Grimes
Graduate Software Developer
I have been with Covernet for around 10 months now, my start date was pushed due to a broken leg on my part but I finally got around to starting with the company in September 2019.
I graduated from Queens University Belfast with a Bachelor’s degree in History, after a year of doing odd jobs to allow me to return to work at Camp ABC in New York, I realised that the job prospects with a history degree were very slim. I had heard about a conversion course at Queens which would allow me to gain a Masters in Software Development so I signed up, and graduated last year with my Masters degree.
I was applying for jobs near the end of my masters program and a IT recruitment agency sent me the details for Covernet graduate program, after researching the company and talking to the managers at my interview I realised that the size of the team and environment would provide the perfect training environment for myself as I has only been working with software for a year.
I enjoy that every day brings a new challenge and new opportunities to learn, and the team at Covernet makes the work environment enjoyable.
I wouldn’t say that I have any one role model – I look up to people who use their work to better the world around them and leave a positive impact on both the people they work with and the environment they work in.
Other than music and going to concerts, my greatest passion is youth work, I still work at my local youth club every week and I am in constant contact with my summer camp in New York, and both of these things allow me to continue my youth work and help the next generation realise their potential.
